Flying with cigars

Updated November 2026

Cigars on the plane

Cigars are generally allowed in both carry-on and checked bags on US flights. You can't smoke them on board, and smoking rules at airports vary.

Lighters

TSA generally allows one common lighter, such as a disposable or Zippo-style lighter, in carry-on bags. Torch (jet-flame) lighters are generally not allowed. Rules change, so check TSA's 'What can I bring?' tool for your exact item before you fly.

Cutters

Small cigar cutters are often allowed, but the final decision rests with the TSA officer. Pack a cheap cutter you won't mind losing, or put your good cutter in checked luggage.

Bringing cigars back into the US

Returning US residents can generally include up to 100 cigars in their duty-free personal exemption. Above that, duty and tax may apply. See CBP's 'Know before you go' page for the current allowance.

Cuban-origin cigars are restricted for US travellers under US sanctions. Check the US Treasury (OFAC) rules before buying abroad.

Protect your cigars

Use a hard travel case or a sealed bag with a small humidity pack, and avoid leaving cigars in a hot car or checked bag on a hot tarmac for long.
